2015 Earth Day Celebration
Saturday, May 2
12-4 PM
2405 Mill Rd, Elizabethtown

This year’s Earth Day celebration is going to be a blast. Come join us on May 2nd, from 12 noon to 4 pm, at the Aberdeen Mills Farm at 2405 Mill Rd., Elizabethtown, Pa 17022.  Adults and children alike may be entertained and educated by this family oriented event. The event is free and open to the public. There will be many fun and informative activities throughout the afternoon and a food vendor will be on site to offer food items for sale. Fried chicken nuggets, strips, and drumsticks; freedom fries, hot dogs, canned sodas and bottled water will be available for purchase. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the TCCCA.

We will be offering a choice between free seeds or seedlings. The tree and shrub seedlings are bare root and would need to be planted soon after the event. The species that will be available will be a mix of different oak and crabapple species, white pine, black locust, silky dogwood, and arrow-wood. There will be wild flower seed packets available for those who do not have the space for a tree or shrub.

There will be many activities throughout the day. The wild flower and tree identification walk will be the first activity at noon. Tours through the old mill and farm-animal barn will also be offered.

Zoo America will be giving a live animal presentation at 1 pm. The following native species will be brought out during the hour-long program: Great-horned owl, screech owl, black snake, box turtle, skunk, and red-tailed hawk. There will be plenty of space, so feel free to bring along a lawn chair if you prefer to sit during the show.

A stream study and a program on freshwater mussels will be held between 2 and 3 pm.

The Lancaster County Conservation District will give an electro-fishing demonstration at 3 pm. An electrical current is run through the water, which temporarily stuns the fish. The fish are collected in nets and identified to assess water quality. All fish are affected by the electricity, so this method shows all of the uncatchable fish that elude anglers. The last time LCCD surveyed this section of stream it produced some very large bass! So be sure to be here at 3 pm for the electro-fishing, so you can see what we catch this time!

Come join us to celebrate Earth Day and so we can take a moment to appreciate the environment together.

We hope to see you on May 2nd at high noon!
