Upcoming Volunteer Opportunities

The Tri-County Conewago Creek Association (TCCCA) is planning several tree planting events that are geared toward improving water quality in the Conewago Creek and its tributaries. We would like to invite the public to join us in accomplishing this goal, since water quality affects everyone. We request that volunteers interested in participating in these events please register so we know how many people to expect. This will enable us to send out more specific details, directions, and parking considerations (as well as address individual questions.)

Riparian buffers filter runoff, provide shade for the stream, help hold stream banks in place, and provide habitat for wildlife.

TCCCA has recently been awarded a grant from the Lancaster County Conservancy’s Water Week Grant Program. We plan to use the funds to revamp and maintain established riparian buffers and hope to find new land owners who are interested in doing water quality improvement projects.

Volunteering to work on riparian buffers can be a fun and rewarding service activity for local community groups and individuals who just want to get outside and enjoy the fresh air and nature on a fall day. It is also a great opportunity to learn about the projects and the environmental impacts of the work we do continually. Everyone is invited to join TCCCA for the following work days:

October 7th – 9 am to 12 pm- Tree planting at Hershey Meadows near where the Conewago Rail Trail crosses over route 743.

October 14th – 9 am to 12 pm- Tree planting at Hershey Meadows

October 21st – 9 am to 12 pm- Tree planting at Hershey Meadows

October 28th – 9 am to 12 pm- Tree planting at Hershey Meadows

November 4th – 9 am to 12 pm – Tree planting at Hershey Meadows

November 11th – 9 am to 12 pm – Tree planting at Hershey Meadows – CANCELLED

November 18th – 9 am to 12 pm – Tree planting where Valley Rd intersects Gallagher Run

December 2nd – Tree planting from 9 am to 12 pm – Location to be announced

December 9th – Tree planting from 9 am to 12 pm – Location to be announced

Items you might need for tree plantings: sunscreen, bug spray, water, waterproof or muck boots, work gloves, shovel, and possibly a mini-sledge or heavy hammer to drive in the stakes.

Individuals interested in helping plant trees during one or more of these events should contact Stewart Williammee at conewagocreek@yahoo.com. Land owners who may be interested in doing a project can also contact Stewart.

If you would like to help out but are not available during these event times contact Stewart, there will be smaller groups planting trees on weekdays (flexible schedule). Cancelations due to bad weather will be posted on the website.

Founded in 2002, TCCCA is a volunteer watershed group committed to monitoring, preserving, enhancing, and promoting the Conewago Creek Watershed in Dauphin, Lebanon, and Lancaster Counties through education, community involvement, and watershed improvement projects.  TCCCA helps landowners plant and maintain riparian buffers and helps interested landowners find programs and apply for grants to fund stream and wildlife habitat restoration.

An electrical current is run through the water which temporarily stuns the fish. The fish are collected in nets and identified to assess water quality. All fish are affected by the electricity so this method shows all of the uncatchable fish that elude anglers. So be sure to be here at 3 pm for the electro-fishing to see what we catch this year!

A food vendor will be on site to offer food items for sale.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the TCCCA.

Please join us as we take a moment to appreciate the environment together.
